Beisbolista estadounidense. En sus años universitarios jugó en primera base; en 1987 se unió a los Oakland Athletics. Pronto mostró la potencia que habría de ser su marca registrada. Los 49 home runs que logró en su primera temporada en las grandes ligas constituyeron un récord, lo que le valió ser nombrado Novato del Año de la Liga Americana. En 1989, su promedio de bateo de 0,343 durante la postemporada llevó a los Oakland a ganar la Serie Mundial. Las lesiones lo persiguieron entre 1993 y 1995. En 1997 fue transferido a los St. Louis Cardinals y ese mismo año conectó 58 home runs. En 1998 quebró el récord de 61 home runs en una temporada, que había ostentado durante 37 años Roger Maris. McGwire y Sammy Sosa mantuvieron en vilo a los fanáticos con su competencia de home runs; finalmente, McGwire estableció un nuevo récord de 70, marca que rompió en 2001 Barry Bonds (73). En 1999, McGwire conectó 65 home runs. Al concluir la temporada 2001 se retiró del béisbol profesional.
